It is true, as one of the participants put it [at our meeting], that when a synagogue is burned it is France that is humiliated, that when a Jew is assaulted it is France that is assaulted. In our Republic, a secular Republic, we have the obligation of respect, tolerance and dialogue in regard to the freedom of thought, the freedom of expression, and religious freedom. These are cardinal virtues which can never be called into question in a Republic as we understand it (...)./."
